Crannig Castle Blog Tour: An Interview with Jill Hubbard

Welcome to Day 2 of the Crannig Castle blog tour! I had the lovely privilege of interviewing Jill Hubbard, one of the 4 siblings who was taken to Calhortz in the first book, Creighton Hill. After Eleanor, Jill is my favorite character in the trilogy. Since I was also one of the final proofreaders, I had a fairly hard time coming up with questions that didn't give away any plot twists and surprises. I think I did a pretty good job, but judge for yourself!

An Interview with Jill Hubbard

If you are ever presented with an opportunity to come back to Calhortz, would you?
I think I would. It isn’t every day one gets to go to a fantasy world, and even though I’d rather leave the adventure part to someone else, I do enjoy feeling like one of the Pevensies. *smiles shyly* Besides, we’ve made some very good friends here, and I’d hate to never see them again. I’m going to miss them, especially Adriel.

So far, what is/are your favorite memory(ies)?
My favorite? *taps her lips in thought* In between all the danger and death defying adventure…I think what stands out the most is seeing Adriel become a Christian. He was hurting so badly when I met him, and struggling with so much. He’s still not perfect, of course, and he still longs to reunite his family, but the change in him is amazing. Yes, I think that’s my favorite.

How do you think your siblings have grown? And some of the other Time Captives?
*grins* Joey has matured a lot. He’s still fun and my little brother, but he’s letting his sweet side show more and fighting with Emily less. He’s always had a leader trapped inside his little boy exterior, and it’s starting to show. Allan, I think, is more confident. He’s always been a leader and a great older brother, but he’s being put to the test now and holding up well. Emily…well, she’s still mostly acting the same, but something feels different. It’s as if she’s acting that way more because she always has than because she actually wants to. I don’t know…she’s just not quite the same as she was, however much she tries to be. As for the other Time Captives, I didn’t know them before, so I can’t really say how they’ve changed.

Would you care to share anything you have learned? Skills, moral lessons, etc?
I’ve learned that when the Bible says God uses the weak things of the world to confound the strong, it’s not kidding. God chooses to work through the lowly that we might be able to truly see that it’s He who really did it. We’re just a bunch of kids, all of us except Adriel out of our own world. Yet we’ve come together and freed the king and are working towards the freedom of Calhortz. We never could do it all in our own strength. But with God, all things are possible.

I'm sure having your siblings with you helps with the homesickness. Do you think about home often?
Unlike the older Time Captives, I haven’t been given much time to be homesick, which I suppose is a good thing. I do miss Anna and my parents, though. I can’t wait to see them again, though I’ll hate to say goodbye here. I’m glad Emily, Allan, and Joey are here. I’d be terribly homesick without them, in spite of having so little time to do nothing.

~~~~~
Isn't she the sweetest?? Seriously, I loved coming up with questions for this interview. I've enjoyed watching all the characters grow and learn different lessons as the story has progressed. And the best part? There are some terrific possibilities for some spin-off stories!
I'll be back Friday with my book review of Crannig Castle. See you then!
Time Captives (Book 3): Crannig Castle - Cover Reveal
It's time for another cover reveal! This is the final book in Morgan Huneke's Time Captive trilogy (click on the link for a list of everyone who is participating today.). The release date is set for November 7, 2016 - just in time for Christmas shopping! It's currently available for pre-orders now on Kindle, but you will also be able to buy the book on Amazon.. Here is a little info on the book:
About the Book
God, please look after Adriel. Keep him safe and keep him from acting foolish. And please help him to be able to find me.
Rae knew she could trust God to look after both of them. It was all she had now.
The Time Captives have been reunited. The rightful king has been freed. Now all that remains is to defeat the strytes who still hold a tyrannical rule over the people of Calhortz. But with their lack of soldiers, it’s a task that is easier said than done. They need allies, but are they worth it when it requires facing ghosts from their pasts?
Returning to his home country only brings the loss of Adriel’s family to the forefront of his mind. His determination to find Rae has never ceased, but now that determination could potentially destroy all that he and the Time Captives have been working towards. And his new-found faith may not be able to withstand the challenge.
Will they be able to set aside their personal struggles for the sake of the freedom of all or will they allow their pasts to consume them? Will they manage to win back Crannig Castle from the rule of the strytes? The fate of Calhortz hangs in the balance.
Crannig Castle is the final book of the Time Captives trilogy, a tale of faith, family, fantasy, and a fight for truth and freedom.
~~~~~~~

I'm really sad to see this trilogy end. As a proofreader, I've come to care for more than a few of the characters. But, Morgan didn't leave me without hope of future stories!

                                                          Mini-interview with Morgan

Was it hard coming up with the cover picture?
Actually, it wasn’t. I found it while searching desperately for a castle for Across the Stars. It was incredibly difficult to find a castle to satisfactorily represent Theotocop, but in that search, I came across Crannig Castle. I remember thinking “that doesn’t work for Theotocop, but it would be perfect for Creighton Hill.” What I didn’t know then was that Creighton Hill would have to be split into three books and I’d have to save the castle picture for the third. But it certainly made things easier to already have it saved!

Any short stories featuring Time Captive characters in the possible future? ;D
To be perfectly honest: I don’t know. I’d like to write short stories about Adriel and his family, I’m desperate to write a sequel to Espionage, I have snippets of ideas involving Captain Herb and his son, I’d love to write more about Grant, but I have a major problem. No plots. Hopefully someday I’ll have more stories involving them all. I hate to say goodbye forever. But right now, it’s all just a maybe.

(As you can see, I would be more than happy to see some characters return and tell more of their stories.)

~~~~~~~
OK, enough stalling and delaying the inevitable. I present.......
THE COVER FOR CRANNIG CASTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like it!!!
Espionage Character Interview: Kyle Roland
Today, as part of Morgan's blog tour promoting her newest book, Espionage, I interviewed Kyle. one of the main characters (and one of my personal favorites). For a list of all the other bloggers taking part in this tour, you can go to Morgan's blog here.
 Kyle is the only son of Sir and Lady Roland. When we first meet Kyle, he is a lonesome boy with a dark secret. I've developed quite a liking for Kyle in the months since first meeting him. He's quiet and friendless, can be shy, but is also a gentleman with a strong sense of honor and justice. Kyle thinks before speaking, as though weighing each word to make sure it's the right one. This interview gave me another small peak into his mind and the type of lord he will be when he inherits the title from Sir Roland.
1) What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me isn’t terribly interesting. I spend most of my time doing lessons with my tutor. He teaches me what he can, but my father is very strict about what I am allowed to learn. I spend what time I can reading or out in the stables. If the day is nice, I will take a book outside. I also enjoy reading up in the tower, away from everyone with a view of the ocean. Occasionally, I will have supper with my parents, but they are not fond of my company, so I generally eat alone with a few servants waiting on me. Then I might study or read a bit more before bed. I’ll sometimes talk with the servants. My father would disapprove, but they do make interesting conversationalists, and they’re kind.
2) You're an only child, correct? I'm sure that can be lonely. Are there any other children for you to interact with?
I am an only child. Neither of my parents like children, my father especially, but he needed an heir, so they had me. Since I’m a boy, they didn’t have any reason to give me siblings. They don’t even like me. Sometimes I’ll go days without seeing either of my parents. *sighs* It certainly is lonely. When I was little, I’d play with the servant children, but my father put a stop to that when he found out. I do see my betrothed, Rosie, somewhat regularly, but while we get along, we don’t really have much in common. I guess that’s what happens with infant betrothals. *his face takes on a pained expression* Can we talk about something other than me?
"Of course. I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable." *I quickly search my mind for a different topic*
3) When did you first suspect your father's treachery?
*snorts* Which time? My father has never exactly been honorable. He’ll do anything if he thinks it will benefit him. This Calhortan alliance controversy is a really big deal to him, and I know he opposes Sir Cumberland on it, like he does on pretty nearly everything. This seems even more important to him than most things, though, so I’m afraid of how far he’ll go, especially since he invited Sir Cumberland to the Autumn Feast. It sounds extremely suspicious, which is part of why I wanted the whole family to come along. I thought maybe if they were all here, we could prevent whatever it is he’s planning.
4) Did you try to tell anyone, or did you keep it to yourself?
*shrugs* I don’t have anyone to tell. It gets difficult to not have any confidants, but sadly I’m used to it. I suppose this is a simple answer: I kept it to myself because I didn’t have a choice.
Poor boy, I think. All these secrets and no one to help bear the burden for the longest time.
5) Were you glad to have Vannie's help when her family came for the festival?
Certainly. *laughs* She’s quite spunky and fun. I barely know her, but from what I’ve heard and seen, I know that if my father is plotting something against hers, she won’t stop until she’s uncovered and stopped it. She’s also…I don’t know, I want to be her friend. I’ve never met anyone quite like her before.
* I give an inward cheer, happy that he's finally making a friend.*
6) Any plans for the future?
Not be like my father. *shrugs* I’m the son of a vassal lord, and his heir. I don’t get to plan my own life. I’ll keep at my studies until I’m an adult, when Rosie turns eighteen we’ll have to get married, and I’ll be trained to take over my father’s position so I am prepared when he can no longer perform his duties. I can’t say I’m looking forward to that sort of life, but it’s the life ahead of me, and if I can be a more honorable man and better vassal lord than my father, and serve God in the process, I’ll be satisfied.
~~~~

See what I mean? Kyle is so honorable, yet weighed down with his father's secrets. I can't wait to see what awaits him in the future. I know the road won't be easy, but Kyle obviously isn't one to shy away from danger when justice is in question.

About the Book

“Sir Roland has invited us to visit for the Autumn Feast.”

When her father’s political archenemy invites them to the Autumn Feast, Vannie uncovers an evil scheme endangering the life of someone close to her. Personal enmity comes to a dangerous head as Vannie struggles to expose the corruption and stop the alliance. Time is running out.

Daddy Long Legs and other news

If you know anything about me, you know how much I love musicals and books. It's even better when a book is made into a musical. Such is the case with Daddy Long Legs. Ashley has gotten me hooked on so many musicals and introduced me to so many new books/authors, I can't even begin to count.

My love for Daddy Long Legs started 2 months ago, when I bought the audio book on Audible.com. Ash had been telling me to check it out for months, but I didn't have time then because of starting a new job and Christmas stuff. Once things finally calmed down, I bought the audio and fell in love with Jerusha Abbott, the poor, lonely orphan girl. She's curious, expressive, and not afraid to speak her mind. And Daddy (Jervis Pendleton) is really sweet and shy. In whole, the book is a must-read for everyone who loves the classics.

I was able to find a FIRST EDITION copy with original illustrations by the author on Amazon. Once I started listening to the musical, I couldn't stop. I watched clips of the show on Youtube, bought the CD, and am now (drumroll, please)................ currently working on a fanfiction prequel on Jervis' (Daddy) backstory. The book and musical gave me plenty of tips on his family and life before Jerusha enters the picture.

Megan McGinnis has been playing Jerusha since the musical opened in 2009, and her husband, Adam Haplin, took over the role of Jervis late last year. I watched a recording of the show with Ashley and it was adorable. Maybe it's because they're husband and wife, but their chemistry is terrific.

I know in one of my last posts I said I was thinking of doing a story on Susan from the Narnia books, but I honestly couldn't come up with anything. The details are so few, I had nothing to pull from, or any little hints on the reason(s) she "is no longer a friend of Narnia". With Daddy, I have enough hints to create a backbone, but enough creative space to write my own story. I'll keep you updated on my progress!

Eleanor: an Interview

Welcome back! Today I am interviewing Eleanor, one of the Time Captives in Morgan Huneke's  Time Captives series. The second book, The Crossways, was released on Amazon Monday.

A little background: Eleanor was the 8th Hubbard to disappear, in the year 1940. She has 3 brothers, and, because of growing up during the Great Depression, is used to taking care of herself and making do with little. Once she managed to escape the dungeon and arrived at the Yatachee Islands, life slowed down a little. That's all I'll say for now; she quickly became my favorite, so it's hard for me to stop. I hope you enjoy the interview!

  1) Was it hard adjusting to life again when you arrived at the Yatachee Islands?
*stiffens and draws in a sharp breath* Yes. I had lived at sea for eight years. Life on land is very different, and though I’d been to the islands before, I didn’t know what it was like to live there. I was alone. At home I’d had my family, and on the Falcon’s Wing I had the crew. It was my choice to live here alone, a choice that had to be made, I know that well, but that doesn’t mean I do not regret it.

2) How did the people living there react at first?
*her eyes dart around uncomfortably* Not well. Some knew me from my visits with the Falcon’s Wing, and so they knew I was a Time Captive. The people in the Islands are far enough from Calhortz to not be bothered by it for Toarna’s sake, but it’s still an unnatural thing, and people don’t always take well to things they cannot understand. Those who didn’t know who I was wanted to put me in the orphanage. Gr…Grant did intervene on my behalf, but I would not see him. I could not. Most people ended by avoiding me.

3) Did it take them long to adjust to your having eternal youth? Did any do so sooner than others?
Most people never adjust. I’m not truly accepted here, except by the orphans. *shrugs* Those who accept my being a Time Captive never mention it, and those who do not simply avoid me. I am accepted at the orphanage where I volunteer. It is difficult to get help, and so they take what I can offer and children will believe and accept anything. I get by.

4) Did you ever find yourself thinking on friends you left behind?
*her face hardens, as if in an attempt to hold back tears* Always. Must I say more? *a pained look comes into her eyes* My author is requiring me to cooperate with this interview, for otherwise… I cannot help but think of them. They were my life. If only I wasn’t a Time Captive…

5) Can you give us a glimpse into your daily life?
*relaxes only slightly* I eat breakfast at my cottage and then go down to the orphanage for the day. I help to care for the little ones and teach the older children to read and write. After supper, I return home, usually with some mending. Occasionally, the orphans who have left the orphanage will come visit me. That about sums up my daily routine.

6) Did anyone from beyond Yatachee ever visit you?
*tenses* No. They would have, but I insisted that they not. It would be far too painful.

One reason I like Eleanor is that she could have had a bitter outlook on life, but she tries to see the best, or at least some good, in her situations. I really just want to wrap her in a blanket, give her cookies and milk, and have a nice long chat. I want to be her friend and make her smile and laugh.

Check out Morgan's blog, Facebook, and Goodreads accounts to see what she's up to next.

Tomorrow I'll be posting my review of The Crossways. Check back in the morning!!

Creighton Hill: a book review

All righty!!! Today I get the privilege of giving you my review of Morgan's book, Creighton Hill, released this past Monday. But first, an excerpt:

 "No one can mysteriously disappear leaving no trace. It isn't realistic."
  " You're right, Emily," her grandfather said thoughtfully. "It isn't realistic. However, a good many things happen in this world that are not realistic, things supernatural."

Emily, Allen, Jill, Joey, and Anna have grown up on their grandfather's tales of ancestors who mysteriously disappeared from Creighton Hill, the plantation home that has been in their family for centuries. When Grampa's death forces them to move into Creighton Hill, the truth about the supposed disappearances is the first thing on their minds. Allen, Jill, Joey, and Anna's, that is. As for Emily, why must they keep at their supernatural hogwash?

Could it be that their family really does just have an unusual history of early deaths? Most people seem to think so. But Grampa's research has uncovered something different.

When mysterious writing matching descriptions found in ancient accounts begins appearing to the children, they know something's up. they must find out what really happened to their ancestors, and work together to discover the reason behind the mysterious writings.

Creighton Hill is the first book of the Time Captive trilogy, a tale of faith, family, fantasy, and a fight for truth and freedom.

My Score: 5/5!!

The Book: I have read and enjoyed Morgan's first two books, and Creighton Hill is no exception. The plot is made up of mysterious disappearances in a family, with a child vanishing every 20 years. No one knows why or how; they're with family one day and gone the next.

The settings take place in several time periods and go between our world and the land of Calhortz. There is a lot of back and forth, but it is easy to follow. The characters have been written so well that it is easy to begin thinking of them as real people.

The style of Creighton Hill makes me think of C.S. Lewis' beloved Narnia books. The traveling to other lands, a land in need of freedom from evil rulers, and the help coming in the form of strangers from another land. This book has something for everyone; and this is just the first book in the trilogy!! Book 2 has a planned release for this Fall.

The Characters:
 I enjoyed getting to read about the different characters, but I think my favorite is Abigail. She is the second one in the family to disappear. Her time period is 1820 (Jane Austen!!!) and plays the violin. If I had to pick a favorite character from the 4 main children, I think I would pick Joey. He has a sweet relationship with most of his family. He and Emily do have a troubled relationship, though. Emily is bitter and quick to find fault. Joey seeks to defend his siblings, but that is often through irritating Emily and distracting her from the other children.
As I said earlier, the characters are very well written and can easily be seen as real people. The antagonists and heroes have been well cast and play their parts extremely well. The story is well rounded, the switches from character to character is smooth, and they are completely believable.

Creighton Hill blog tour: Character Interview- Abigail

Welcome back! Today I am interviewing Abigail, one of the characters that "vanishes under mysterious conditions" in Creighton Hill. A little background: Abigail is the eldest child of her family, and "disappeared" in 1820, exactly 20 years after her Uncle George. I won't give too much away; you'll need to read the book, which came out yesterday!!

And now, my interview with Abigail, Time Captive:

1) At the time you "disappear", you are the 2nd member of your family to vanish under mysterious circumstances. Did you grow up hearing stories about your Uncle George?
I did certainly know about my uncle George’s disappearance. It was the common assumption of our family that he was kidnapped, but officially he had died. All the neighbors and townspeople thought he must have been murdered. We were not always well accepted because of such suppositions. It made growing up difficult, but we always had each other. And strangely, my parents never seemed to believe there was anything mysterious about the situation. I knew there was, particularly when I began to see the writing of which he wrote.

2) How did it feel meeting George and your other relatives once you were in the Tower?
It was an odd sensation to meet relatives of other generations who still appeared to be the same age as myself. Finally knowing for a certainty what had become of my uncle comforted my mind not a little, but at the same time I felt like somewhat of an outsider. They had all been there for varying amounts of time, five years to sixty. They knew each other quite well, and I knew them not at all. I had not met them in our own world and I had been with the kalicans so long I was not the same girl I was then, even had I met them back home. Still, George is much like my father and brother and so we were able to become close friends, despite some initial difficulties.

3) What did a day in the Tower look like for you?
I spent few full days in the Tower, to say the truth. We always began with morning devotions and began our studies with Camthalion after breakfast. Though we were essentially prisoners, there was no reason to neglect our minds. We spent our afternoons and evenings in each others’ company, when we were not required to appear before Mudan. However, it was not long after arriving in the Tower that I discovered an old violin situated there. I had learned to play when I still lived at Creighton Hill and I recognized it as a means of alleviating the grief I felt at leaving Kalica under less than pleasant circumstances. I was therefore instituted as court violinist. But I fear to say more, lest I should give away my story.

4) You also stayed for many years with some natives of Kalica. How was that?

The kalicans were my new family. I never knew, living my life as a plantation owner’s daughter, how wonderful it is to live with Creation. The kalicans were always kind to me, always accepting my status as both a human and a Time Captive. They also taught me that life need not always be solemn and proper, that it is God’s will that we live by faith, not a strict set of rules, the breaking of which can never be forgiven. The village was made up of leafy wigwams which were so pleasant. Indeed, it was hard to go back to true indoor life after years of living in Kalica. I shall never forget how Luuke and Evalin took me in, though Evalin was ill, made me one of them, and allowed me to remain with them as generation after generation of kalicans grew to adulthood. I shall always love them.

Creighton Hill Blog Tour: Interview with Morgan Huneke

Welcome to my little corner of the internet as I share an interview I had with Morgan Huneke in regards to her latest book, Creightom Hill. I will also be posting a character interview tomorrow and my review of the book Friday. Stay tuned!! You can also visit http://morganhuneke.blogspot.com/2015/06/creighton-hill-is-here.html to get a complete schedule for the rest of the week. Many other blogs are helping spread the word about Creighton Hill's release.

Before the Interview, here is a little information on Morgan:

Morgan Elizabeth Huneke is a homeschool graduate who lives in Georgia. She has enjoyed creating characters and writing stories since early childhood. Her other interests include reading, playing the piano and violin, and politics. She is the author of Across the Stars and The Experiment. You can visit her at http://shirereviews.blogspot.com/ and http://www.morganhuneke.com/blog

And now, without further ado, the Interview:

1) What gave you the idea for Creighton Hill's plot line? Was there something specific?
Unfortunately, I can’t remember the specific inspiration, or even if there was any. I love being able to trace it, like I can with The Experiment and the outer space dystopia I’m working on, but, like Across the Stars, I either can’t remember what sparked it, or it just happened. I do know that The Chronicles of Narnia played a huge role, as it is the main reason I wanted to write fantasy. And the concept of children defeating an evil queen to free an oppressed people undoubtedly comes from there. But I also received much inspiration from Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. That’s where the concept of the Time Captives comes from. And the house Creighton Hill is primarily inspired by the Villa Caprice in the Gone-Away Lake books by Elizabeth Enright. There are pirates all because I was reading the Pirates & Faith series by Molly Evangeline at the time, and decided I didn’t want to wait any longer to write a pirate story. It somehow all wove itself together in my mind to become one story.

2) How many books are you expecting to be in the series?
Short answer: Three Time Captives books, plus one companion.

Long answer: Definitely the trilogy, but as far as connected stories, the possibilities are endless. I’ve already written a companion, Espionage, and I really want to write a sequel to it. I also hope to write a pirate story or two or more about Captain Jeremy Herb’s (the pirate in Time Captives) son Edmund, who has just been born at the time of Time Captives, though I think I ended up cutting the only scene with him. Actually, those stories were originally separate, but I decided to connect them with Time Captives and it ended up being important. Also in that world, probably somehow connected to the Herbs, I have a bit of an idea for a sea adventure involving a fisherman’s daughter. Then I would like to write a few extra short stories filling in gaps and continuing the stories of certain Time Captives characters. Back in this world, the Hubbards are connected with my unwritten contemporary fiction characters, eventually by marriage, which gives them plenty of possibilities there. And actually, those contemporary fiction characters are also connected to the Watsons of Across the Stars, so it’s all rather wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey. Trouble is, this whole thing is in competition with a few sci-fi ideas, so goodness knows how much will actually get written and when.

3) Care to share any funny memories that happened while writing this?
I’m not sure how funny they are, but I came up with a few memories to share. I started the book at Disney World. We were at our hotel. Now, from our balcony, you could see both the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. And the EPCOT night show was at the same time as the fireworks from Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. My family was out on the balcony watching two fireworks shows, and I was in the bedroom scribbling down the prologue to Creighton Hill. They kept trying to get me to come watch, but I was just like, “I can kind of see it from in here.”  I had some other interesting writing locations as well. Once, I was paging at the state Capitol, sliding down the page bench while scribbling on a notepad. Last summer, I had an idea for a book three scene that I hadn’t gotten to yet, and I wanted to get it down before I forgot. So I carried a pen and pad of paper around in the pocket of my shorts and took it out to scribble it down whenever I had a spare moment. Thing was, we were getting ready to be in Independence Day parades and events for Barry Loudermilk. So I would sit on the ground next to a classic car writing on a notepad. My friend Brianna said I was obsessed with writing. I wasn’t, I just didn’t want to lose that great, super sad scene.

4) Can you give us a hint of what to expect in the next book?

More of the modern Time Captives, more backstory for older Time Captives, primarily Eleanor, new characters such as my favorite a slave boy named Adriel, Captain Herb’s backstory, sea adventures. I’ll go ahead and tell you that you’ll get to meet the rightful king of Calhortz. We get to see more elves and a good bit more of the world of Calhortea. And did I mention Adriel? And Eleanor? You get to meet them and cry over them and over how badly I ruined their lives. :D

Thank you, Morgan, for answering my questions!
Come back tomorrow for my character interview! Katelyn
