Welcome back! Today I am interviewing Abigail, one of the characters that "vanishes under mysterious conditions" in Creighton Hill.
A little background: Abigail is the eldest child of her family, and "disappeared" in 1820, exactly 20 years after her Uncle George. I won't give too much away; you'll need to read the book, which came out yesterday!!
And now, my interview with Abigail, Time Captive:
1) At the time you "disappear", you are the 2nd member of your family to vanish under mysterious circumstances. Did you grow up hearing stories about your Uncle George?
And now, my interview with Abigail, Time Captive:
1) At the time you "disappear", you are the 2nd member of your family to vanish under mysterious circumstances. Did you grow up hearing stories about your Uncle George?
I did certainly know about my uncle George’s disappearance. It was the common assumption of our family that he was kidnapped, but officially he had died. All the neighbors and townspeople thought he must have been murdered. We were not always well accepted because of such suppositions. It made growing up difficult, but we always had each other. And strangely, my parents never seemed to believe there was anything mysterious about the situation. I knew there was, particularly when I began to see the writing of which he wrote.
2) How did it feel meeting George and your other relatives once you were in the Tower?
It was an odd sensation to meet relatives of other generations who still appeared to be the same age as myself. Finally knowing for a certainty what had become of my uncle comforted my mind not a little, but at the same time I felt like somewhat of an outsider. They had all been there for varying amounts of time, five years to sixty. They knew each other quite well, and I knew them not at all. I had not met them in our own world and I had been with the kalicans so long I was not the same girl I was then, even had I met them back home. Still, George is much like my father and brother and so we were able to become close friends, despite some initial difficulties.
3) What did a day in the Tower look like for you?
I spent few full days in the Tower, to say the truth. We always began with morning devotions and began our studies with Camthalion after breakfast. Though we were essentially prisoners, there was no reason to neglect our minds. We spent our afternoons and evenings in each others’ company, when we were not required to appear before Mudan. However, it was not long after arriving in the Tower that I discovered an old violin situated there. I had learned to play when I still lived at Creighton Hill and I recognized it as a means of alleviating the grief I felt at leaving Kalica under less than pleasant circumstances. I was therefore instituted as court violinist. But I fear to say more, lest I should give away my story.
4) You also stayed for many years with some natives of Kalica. How was that?
The kalicans were my new family. I never knew, living my life as a plantation owner’s daughter, how wonderful it is to live with Creation. The kalicans were always kind to me, always accepting my status as both a human and a Time Captive. They also taught me that life need not always be solemn and proper, that it is God’s will that we live by faith, not a strict set of rules, the breaking of which can never be forgiven. The village was made up of leafy wigwams which were so pleasant. Indeed, it was hard to go back to true indoor life after years of living in Kalica. I shall never forget how Luuke and Evalin took me in, though Evalin was ill, made me one of them, and allowed me to remain with them as generation after generation of kalicans grew to adulthood. I shall always love them.
