The book I am reviewing today is a classic (what else would you read?) and a personal favorite. It has been made into 2 movies, with a semi-sequel. I say "semi" because it has different actors and I haven't read the sequels, so I cannot judge how accurate it is.
The book in question? See for yourself......
I actually have two copies, this one and another, older copy.
The setting is different locations in England and France in 1792 in the early stages of the French Rebellion. Sir Percy and his French wife, Lady Marguerite Blakeney are the fashion and social leaders of the English nobility. The rumor is that Sir Percy despises her for sending a French noble and his family to the guillotine and Lady Marguerite married Sir Percy only for his money.
All things considered, the book is very clean and enjoyable for all readers. There is a slight scene where Marguerite considers how it must seem to others when she is traveling to France with one of the League members in search of Sir Percy. But it is written for laughs and laughs you will get. Two swear words are said in the book, but they can be marked over in pencil if you own a copy. If borrowing, insert a different word-the funnier the better!
I enjoy this book for the laughs and sighs I get out of it. The laughs from the many minor characters, the disguises, the obvious answers staring you in the face, and the witty, nonsensical comments made about cravats; the sighs at the end when all is forgiven and the hero and heroine escape.
I think everyone should read this book at some point in their life, and the many sequels too-if you can find any copies, please let me know. I haven't had much success in that area and I do so want to read them!
Sorry for the rare-nest of my posts;life is a tad busy right now and the poor blog suffers as a result. Thanks for reading and I look forward to reading your comments!
