I had some friends over Sunday after church and we watch
The Young Victoria. It was BEAUTIFUL!
She was so young, just turned 18, when she came to the throne.
She was the only hope for the British Empire. The last few kings had been fools and nearly ruined the Kingdom. But, there were those who hoped she would fail or could be controlled.
One example would be her Mother's adviser, Sir John Conroy.
I think her Uncle, King William IV, was the only one who really liked her and wanted the best for Victoria, as well as his wife, Queen Adelaide.
Her Mother was easily controlled and wanted more influence at Court.
But, Victoria resisted as much as she could.
Lord Melbourne had his own agenda. Victoria trusted him a lot and this caused some tension between her and Albert.
Speaking of Albert...
I liked Rupert Friend as Albert much better than as 2005 P&P's Wickham. He was very caring and encouraged Victoria to "better master the rules of the game until [she could] play it better than they..."
Now, like any other couple, they did have their quarrels.
But, I think she had a better reign with Albert by her side than she would have without him.
Here are some quotes from the movie that I really enjoyed:
Victoria: "[to her council] I am young, but I am willing to learn, and I mean to devote my life to the service of my country and my people. I look for your help in this. I know I shall not be disappointed. Thank you."
Albert: "[to Victoria] For pity's sake, smile, woman. Anyone would think we had quarreled." This was just too funny.
Quotes from different scenes:
Victoria: Do you ever feel like a chess piece yourself? In a game being played against your will.
Albert: Do you?Victoria: Constantly. I see them leaning in and moving me around the board.Albert: The Duchess and Sir John?Victoria: Not just them. Uncle Leopold. The king. I'm sure half the politicians are ready to seize hold of my skirts and drag me from square to square.Albert: Then you had better master the rules of the game until you play it better than they can.Victoria: You don't recommend I find a husband to play it for me?Albert: I should find one to play it with you, not for you.
Lord Melbourne: Your Highness, there's your opening if you'll take my advice...Albert: Lord Melbourne, forgive me but you seem to have confused me with a member of your club. I am not your drinking companion nor your whist partner. I am the husband of your sovereign. And as such, I will make my own decisions, and I neither seek nor invite your advice. Good evening.
Victoria: [crying in his arms] I'm so sorry! I thought I was going to lose you!Albert: I don't think he was a very good shot.Victoria: Why did you do it? So stupid, why did you do it?Albert: I had two very good reasons. First, I am replaceable and you are not.Victoria: You are not replaceable to me!Albert: Second, you're the only wife I've got or ever will have. You are my whole existence, and I will love you until my very last breath.
Honestly, the reasons he listed were not what I was expecting. Victoria is expecting their first child and I was hoping that they were the two reasons. But, these were some good reasons as well. Just not expected. But, all in all it was a good movie!
