This week my friend Ashley published her book, Becoming Nikki. YEA!!!! *round of applause*
Disclaimer: I got to read an advance copy in exchange for my thoughts on it. This is my honest opinion. But first, a synopsis:
What would you do if you were given the opportunity to rebuild a broken relationship?
Alec and Nikki Scott are the perfect ice dancing duo, executing flawless technique and brilliant performance abilities each time they compete. No one doubts their camaraderie, not even their closest friends.
But looks can be deceiving. Off the ice, their relationship is in shambles. Ice dancing is the only thing they have in common anymore... and Alec wants to quit.
Just as Nikki feels like their relationship can't get any worse, an unexpected tragedy crashes into her life. She's left struggling with a difficult choice as her opinion of her brother slowly starts to change.
Whatever she decides, she knows her life will never be the same.
Exciting, right?
Overall, I loved the book. The characters were well written, the plot moved along nicely; it was a very interesting read.
Plot: 5/5
I don't think amnesia is a very easy topic to write about. Ashley did a tremendous job handling Alec's accident and the events following it. I can tell Ashley put a lot of research into this. The family relationships were very realistic. Kind of made me think of my own family.
Setting: 5/5
Set somewhere in the modern United States, the story centers mainly on ice skating and Nikki and Alec's relationship. I have only seen a few ice dancing performances, mostly Olympic competitions, but it seems spot on to this reader.
Writing: 5/5
The writing flowed quite smoothly. Her style seems to be very open and real. That is what made reading Nikki so enjoyable - the characters were so real.
I honestly don't know what else to say; the book was great! My sister also read and loved it.
The paperback is now available on Amazon. I strongly encourage you to go get a copy; they would make great Christmas gifts.
