A few weeks ago I was perusing the library shelves, looking for a new book to read. This one caught my eye because of the cover and the time period (1870's). This was a time change for the U.S. The Civil War is over, Northern hero General U.S. Grant is in his second term as President and is trying to give African-Americans get the vote. All in all, change is in the air.
About the book:
The Little Sparrows mainly focuses on siblings Mary (8), Johnny (6), and Lizzie (4) as they journey on one of Reverend Charles Brace's orphan trains through the Midwest after their parents are in a accident. Mary is trying to be brave and optimistic, but will they be adopted by the same family or split up?
Also featured in sub-plots are orphans Josie, Jimmy, and Barry as they face the unknown. Will there be a family waiting for them at journey's end? Or will they be taken back to New York for a later try? These questions especially trouble little Jimmy as he faces rejection again and again. Can no one see what a precious treasure hides behind his lisp and stutter?
My thoughts:
As I mentioned earlier, the cover is what caught my eye. As I read the back cover and flipped through the pages, I kept seeing Scripture verses popping up (a nice plus!). And the trilogy is written by a husband-wife team. I've requested the other two books from the library and can't wait to read them! I think this book deserves 4.3 on the scale (because no book, other than the Bible, is TRULY perfect).
Any questions or thoughts? Please leave a comment and let me know!
